Hairy tower design

25 June 2008

WSP has been involved in the creation of a fairytale-inspired art installation on display in the Covent Garden piazza in London

Hairy tower design

We provided the structural design for the base and timber frame of a six-metre tower embellished with a carved pattern inspired by Rapunzel’s hair.

Designed by 6a Architects and fashion designers Eley Kishimoto, the Hairywood tower is part of the Skin and Bones exhibition currently at Somerset House, which explores the relationship between fashion and architecture.  It forms a link between Somerset House and Covent Garden and marks the route between the two locations.

Visitors can climb up inside the tower to a small elevated cabin for an unusual view over Covent Garden.  It’s proving a major attraction, and will remain at Covent Garden until 20 July.
